June 2008. Some 4 years after all the tigers in Sariska were wiped out by poachers, A young male tiger has been airlifted from Ranthanbore to Sariska.

The relocation of the tiger marks the first of several planned to revive Sariska's tiger population. Sariska covers some 900 sq km of what should be prime tiger habitat.

The tiger, thought to be 3 years old, was darted and tranquilised in Ranthanbore before being airlifted by helicopter to Sariska, He was then released into a 1 hectare enclosure where a goat had been released (Wildlife Extra questions the wisdom of training tigers to kill goats, the local villagers main livestock.). If all goes according to plan, he will be moved to a larger enclosure shortly before being released into the main body of the park. The tiger has a collar so will be carefully tracked and monitored.

This is the first time a tiger has been relocated in an operation like this, though many other species have been relocated in the past. There are plans to relocate a total of 5 tigers, 3 male and 2 female, to Sariska in the next few months.
