First wild beavers in Scotland for 250 years to be caught.

news/escaped-beaver
The early tell-tale signs were the stumps of young trees that appeared to have been gnawed off. And when a beaver dam appeared, the experts from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland were called in.

It appears that someone had misguidedly released a pair of beavers into the wild in Scotland, near the Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Although various bodies have been seeking permission to release beavers into the wild in Scotland, no permission has yet been granted, and it is thought that someone has taken the matter into their own hands. However a re-introduction of this type needs very careful monitoring and controls.

Minister keen to have beavers back

  • 13 June 2007. Scotlands new environment minister has indicated in an interview with the Sunday Herald that he is keen to see beavers back in Scotland. Mr Russell will be meeting wth Scottish Natural Heritage next week to discuss the issue.
At least two beavers were spotted, and, after a week of experimentation (beaver trapping is a lost art in Scotland) one of the beavers was lured into a heavily disguised 5 foot long metal cage by some all too tempting carrots and apples.

This solitary beaver, believed to be a European beaver, is now ensconced in Edinburgh Zoo, while the search goes on for his/her mate.
